The Kirkland Community Foundation is partnering with the Kirkland Police Department on several community-centered initiatives that strengthen appreciation, connection, wellness, and public safety in Kirkland.
This partnership reflects a simple belief: public safety is not only about emergency response. It is also about relationships, prevention, trust, and community care. When residents, businesses, nonprofits, and first responders are connected, Kirkland is stronger.
The Foundation is honored to support KPD through several upcoming efforts, including National Police Week, a police officer wellness initiative, National Night Out, and KPD’s September car show in support of the Police Cadets.
During National Police Week, the Kirkland Community Foundation will show support for KPD by attending the KPD Police Officer Memorial Ceremony on Friday, May 15 at 8:00 a.m. at the Kirkland Justice Center.
Peace Officers Memorial Day is observed each year during National Police Week to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across the country, especially those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. In recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day, the Kirkland Police Department Honor Guard will lower flags to half-staff at the Kirkland Justice Center and lay a ceremonial wreath to honor fallen officers.
The Foundation is inviting local business leaders, property owners, managers, and community donors to join us at the ceremony as a visible sign of gratitude for the officers and professional staff who serve Kirkland with care, courage, and commitment.
Community members and businesses will also be able to show their support with ribbons and stickers available through the Foundation.
The Kirkland Police Department includes 159 commissioned and professional staff who help keep Kirkland a safe and welcoming community by upholding the department’s mission “to protect and serve our community with honor, integrity, and courage.”
One of the Foundation’s first priorities is supporting a police officer wellness initiative focused on stress regulation, resilience, and officer wellbeing.
Police officers regularly encounter high-stress situations, trauma, and intense decision-making environments. Supporting their wellness is a practical and meaningful way to care for the people who care for Kirkland.
The Foundation is exploring the creation of a designated endowed fund that could support KPD in perpetuity. The first funding priority would be helping KPD create a wellness room at police headquarters, offering officers a place to regulate stress, reset during difficult shifts, and return to service with greater steadiness and resilience.
This is a prevention-focused investment in the health of officers and the quality of service they are able to provide to the community.

The Foundation is also partnering with KPD around National Night Out, a community-building effort that encourages neighbors to gather, connect, and show up for one another.
Strong neighborhoods help create a safer and more connected Kirkland. When neighbors know each other, notice one another, and build relationships before moments of crisis, the whole community is stronger.
To encourage more neighborhood participation, the Foundation plans to sponsor sidewalk grants for registered National Night Out gatherings. These small grants will help neighbors create simple, welcoming events that bring people together.
We are also planning a special incentive for registered gatherings: a visit from a local celebrity or two. The goal is to add a little fun, encourage more neighborhoods to register, and help make National Night Out feel like a true community celebration.
In September, the Foundation is excited to participate in KPD’s car show in support of the Police Cadets.
The Police Cadet program helps young people learn about public service, leadership, and careers in law enforcement. Supporting this program is another way the community can invest in the next generation of civic-minded leaders.
