Morning Matters: 4,700 Breakfasts, Countless Fresh Starts

When we launched the Morning Matters Initiative this spring, our goal was simple: make sure no one in Kirkland starts the day hungry. Thanks to your generosity, that goal became a reality—4,700 breakfasts will be served in local shelters this summer.

What started as an idea—a way to restock empty breakfast shelves—quickly grew into a community movement. Together, we raised nearly $7,000 to support three local programs: Helen’s Place, New Bethlehem, and the LWUMC Safe Parking Program. Each serves women, children, and families working hard to rebuild stability and independence.

A Legacy of Care

During the pandemic, Kirkland neighbors stepped up for one another in extraordinary ways. Morning Matters continues that legacy—ensuring every child, parent, and individual has something nourishing to begin their day with dignity.

During a trial shopping trip with Karina from the Safe Parking Program, we learned how every dollar can stretch further when we understand the real needs of our neighbors. Bulk items don’t always work well in shared kitchens, so your support is helping us stock individually packaged, shelf-stable items—portable, safe, and practical for those with limited space or equipment.

Why It Matters

A bowl of cereal may seem small, but to someone starting over, it represents normalcy, stability, and care.

Food insecurity doesn’t take a summer break. By stocking breakfast shelves now, we’re helping shelters prepare for the months ahead when demand often increases and donations slow down.

Looking Ahead

Because of you, hundreds of Kirkland neighbors will start their mornings nourished and supported. And we’re not stopping here. The Morning Matters Initiative is part of the Foundation’s Health & Housing Area of Impact, which continues to strengthen programs that promote well-being and stability for all residents.
